Saint Veronica and the Shroud

Saint Veronica lived in Jerusalem and was an especially pious person. Saint Veronica had a big heart and that is why she took pity on Jesus when he suffered carrying the Cross during his Way of the Cross on the way to Mount Calvary where he would be crucified. Saint Veronica, moved by compassion, wiped away the blood and sweat that covered the face of Christ during his Via Crucis.

Saint Veronica cleaned the face of Christ that was full of blood from his wounds and sweat from the effort he was making carrying the Cross. The veil, cloth or canvas with the Santa Veronica cleaned Our Lord Jesus Christ was marked with the features of the face of Jesus. A real portrait of the image of our Lord. It is for this reason that it became one of the most important relics and is known internationally by numerous names such as the Veil of Veronica or the Holy Face.

This fact is not reflected in any of the Gospels, but tradition has made it reach our days as we can see in the Sixth Station of a Way of the Cross. "Consider how the devout woman Veronica, seeing Jesus so fatigued and with his face bathed in sweat and blood, offered him a cloth, and our Lord wiping herself with it, her holy image was imprinted on it."

It is believed that after the events that occurred during Jesus' Way of the Cross, Saint Veronica decided to leave Jerusalem and live in Rome. On this trip she did not separate from her beloved veil.

On July 12 we celebrate Saint Veronica's day.
