Bishop's Mitre

Bishop's Mitre

There are several types of episcopal miters, with more or less ornaments depending on the solemnity of the celebration in which they are used. In this way we can distinguish between:

  • Precious miter: adorned with embroidery and even rhinestones to be used in the most solemn acts in which no other type of miter is specified. It can never be used by minor prelates.
  • Golden mitre : they do not have embroidery but are covered by a gold blade. It was used in Advieno and Curaresma and other blessings not solementes.
  • Simple Miter: simple white miter that was used at funerals and by non-main officiants in those more solemn ceremonies. It is currently used by Pope Francis.

Currently, the mitres are made with cardboard covered with fabric (gallon, trevira, linen) or also with a sheet of mica (plastic). Two wide ribbons called inflates hang from the rear edge of the miter.

The episcopal miter is the headdress with which bishops or other ecclesiastics who have the right to use pontificals cover their heads during liturgical services.
