The color of the altar cloth in Advent

The season of Advent is the prelude to Christmas. During Advent, we prepare for the celebration of the Birth of Jesus.

On the one hand, it is a time of penance, reflection and recollection. Catholics have to look inward to analyze our behavior. This process of analysis and assessment of ourselves is essential to properly prepare ourselves for the arrival of our Savior, Jesus.

On the other hand, it is a time of joy and hope. The arrival of Jesus will illuminate the world again.

This double aspect of the Advent season is reflected in the typical colors of these dates. In the first place, the liturgical color purple, as a symbol of penance, and, secondly, the color pink, as a symbol of hope.

Taking into account the importance of purple and pink in Advent, it is common for altar tablecloths to reflect these two colors, either in embroidery, decoration or in the tablecloth itself.
