Meaning of the colours of Advent candles?
The colours of Advent candles are purple and rose. Three purple candles represent penance and one rose candle symbolises joy at the nearness of Christmas. This set defines the liturgical symbolism of the season of Advent as a period of preparation for Christmas.
When speaking about the colours of Advent candles, one refers to the season of Advent as a time of liturgical preparation towards Christmas, the birth of Jesus. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal indicates that purple is used in the seasons of Advent and Lent, associated with conversion and Christian hope GIRM n. 346. Purple represents the penitential character of the season of Advent.
The rose candle that is lit on the third Sunday is a representation of joy and hope at the nearness of the Birth of Jesus. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal recalls that rose may be used on Gaudete Sunday as a sign of joy in the midst of the path of preparation towards the Christmas season.
Advent wreath
Advent wreath is an altar candlestick or stand that holds the four candles (in some cases five) that are lit progressively on each Sunday of Advent. This process of sequential lighting, together with the colours of Advent candles, makes it possible to meditate on the different stages of the history of salvation and accompanies the prayers proper to each celebration.
The traditional lighting of the candles is one purple candle for the first Sunday of Advent, another purple candle for the second, the rose candle for Gaudete Sunday, and a third purple candle for the fourth Sunday. This order can be adapted to parish catechesis, indicating in each celebration the specific meaning of the light that is lit and recalling that all the candles together announce the coming of Christ, Light of the world.
Advent candles with container for liquid wax
The candles for Advent wreath with containers for liquid wax are a good purchase option for those who seek to combine fidelity to the liturgical tradition and convenience in use. The liquid wax reservoir system prevents paraffin dripping onto the wreath and/or the altar cloth, which makes the preparation of each Mass easier and simplifies the subsequent cleaning.
Thanks to the capacity of the paraffin cartridges, the candles can remain lit throughout the celebration, even in prolonged vigils or liturgies with abundant singing.
The PVC exterior provides the appearance of a solid candle, always maintaining the same visual height on the Advent wreath, even after several celebrations. This feature is especially useful in parishes where the wreath is placed in a visible place in the sanctuary. Thus the community clearly perceives the colours of Advent candles without distractions due to differences in size or deformations caused by melted wax.
The top cap protects the wick when the candles are not lit and reduces evaporation of the fuel, which contributes to a more efficient use of the paraffin.
