Saint Anthony of Padua, the Doctor Evangelicus of the Catholic Church

Saint Anthony, also known as Anthony of Padua or Anthony of Lisbon,  was a saint of Portuguese origin who was born in the city of Lisbon at the end of the 12th century.

He achieved great fame and respect from his contemporaries for his profound knowledge of the Holy Scripture, marked by his missionary vocation and his tireless preaching work.

His deep knowledge and his great evangelizing work in Italy and France earned him the nickname Doctor Evangelicus.

He was canonized in 1232 and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pius XII in 1946.

Responsory prayer to Saint Anthony of Padua to find lost objects

Popular tradition links Saint Anthony of Padua with the recovery of lost objects. It is common for the faithful to direct their prayers, orations, novenas, and general prayers to Saint Anthony seeking his intercession to find things that have been lost.

Some sources relate the prayers to Saint Anthony with finding lost objects to a passage in the life of the Saint. According to what is known, the Saint had lost a book that he greatly cherished. Distressed by the loss of such a valuable volume, he prayed fervently to God to recover the book.

Such was the faith with which Saint Anthony performed his prayer, that the Child Jesus appeared to him and returned the beloved book.
