Liturgical pall | Meaning

The pall is one of the four altar cloths that make up what is known as altar sets. The altar sets are made up of lavabo towel, pall, purificator and corporal.

The pall is a square cloth. Its size may vary, but it is usually between 12 and 17 cm. The pall, unlike the other cloths of the altar sets, tends to have a lot of consistency, being totally rigid in many cases. This rigidity was formerly obtained by treating the pall with starch. Nowadays, the consistency that characterizes this altar cloth is achieved with plastic or cardboard plates that are placed inside the pall.

Liturgical pall | Liturgical function and utility

The fundamental function of the palls is to serve as a protector for the Eucharistic elements , the Wine and the Bread, during the liturgical celebration. The pall is usually placed on top of the chalice when the Blood of Christ is deposited in the sacred vessel. It is also used to cover the Hosts when they are on the paten awaiting the Communion of the faithful.

The pall serves as a cover to prevent any unwanted element from coming into contact with the Holy Form or with the Wine. The pall prevents dust, insects or any other element foreign to the Eucharistic celebration from falling.

Liturgical pall | Clothing, embroidery and decoration

Palls, matching the other altar cloths, are typically made of white cloth . The upper part of the pall and the outline are often decorated. Traditionally, the upper part of the pall is embroidered with Eucharistic elements and other religious symbols. The outline is frequently finished off with a gold or white chevron to match the cloth of the altar cloths.
