Votive candleholder, what is it?

A votive candleholder, also known as a candlestand or a candlestick stand, is a typically metal structure that is commonly used in Catholic churches and parishes.

There are different types of votive candleholders, but the most common ones consist of two parts: a base or pedestal and a votive candle area.

  • Base of the Catholic votive candleholder

The base or pedestal is the part of the structure that rests on the ground.

It can be composed of a single support or several. In other words, there can be votive candleholders with a central base that supports the entire structure, or it can have multiple legs like a table.

  • Votive candle area

The actual votive candle area is where the candles are placed. It is the top part of the structure.

Primitive votive candleholders were tables placed next to altars with the intention that the faithful would place candles in a predetermined place orderly. Candles and candle flames posed a risk to the furniture and wooden figures of primitive churches.

The shape of votive candleholders has evolved from primitive tables to tiered shelves. These more modern forms allow for the lighting, extinguishing, and removal of candles and large candles with much greater ease.

Importance of the votive candleholder in the Catholic Church

The importance of votive candleholders is directly related to the significance of candles in liturgical rituals and celebrations.

Candles are a fundamental element in masses and other parish celebrations, such as the Easter Vigil.

The light provided by the candle flames has traditionally been associated with the presence of Christ. The world was in darkness, and humanity lived in obscurity because of our sins.

Jesus, through His life, death, and resurrection, brought light into the world, allowing men and women to live eternal life in the presence of God.
