Don Bosco, founder of the Salesians

Saint John Bosco, popularly known as Don Bosco, is the founder of the Salesian Family . Saint John Paul II declared him "father and teacher of youth".

Don Bosco was born on August 16, 1815 in Becchi, Castelnuovo d'Asti, Piedmont, Italy. He was born into a deeply religious but very poor family. His mother, the venerable Margarita Occhiena, who was left a widow when Don Bosco was only two years old. It was a very difficult moment in the family group.

Due to his family circumstances, Don Bosco had to mature quickly. The situation at home was very precarious and they needed to obtain money to survive. Don Bosco, being just a child, began to work outside the home to earn money for his family.

One day, when Don Bosco was resting after a long day of work, he had a dream in which Jesus appeared to him. Our Lord instructed him that he should win the children's affection with charity and not by force. Furthermore, Jesus told Don Bosco that the Virgin Mary would serve as his guide along his path.

A great desire to exercise the priesthood quickly developed in him, especially so that he could help and guide the young men he had met. He entered the Chieri Seminary. Here he met Saint Joseph Cafasso. He was ordained a priest in 1841.

Don Bosco, as a priest, helped young people and people with problems wherever he found them. After a while he decided to settle in the suburb of Valdocco.

In the year 1859, Don Bosco founded the Salesians. Years later, she also collaborated to found the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. Later he also founded the Salesian Cooperators. It also organizes the construction of several temples such as the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin.

Don Bosco died on January 31, 1888 after a life dedicated to helping youth.

We celebrate Don Bosco's day on January 31.
