Embroidery of the Marian Chasuble

The embroideries of Marian symbols are common elements of liturgical and priestly ornaments.

Generally, priests wear garments decorated with Marian symbols during feasts and celebrations related to Our Holy Mother. The day of the Immaculate Conception, the day of the Virgin of Carmen, the day of the Ascension are some of the days on which we can see our parish priests dressed in Marian ornaments.

This chasuble model is decorated with two elements related to the figure of the Virgin: the Marian monogram and the blue flowers, in this case blue lilies.

  • Marian Monogram with Crown

The Marian monogram is a graphic symbol composed of the two letters A and M forming a representative symbol of the Virgin Mary.

The letters A and M represent the expression Ave Maria in Latin. The word Ave comes from the Latin verb "avēre" which means "to be healthy, to enjoy health".

This expression is used as a greeting, being the respectful equivalent to hello or good morning.

The crown that accompanies the Marian monogram has its own symbolism and meaning. It represents the power of Mary as queen of heaven and earth, as well as her ability to intercede between men and God.

  • Blue Flowers | Blue Lilies

The sky-blue color is closely related to the Virgin Mary and, in particular, to the Immaculate Conception in the Catholic church.

The blue color, following the Spanish Immaculist tradition, represents the absolute purity of the Virgin Mary, who was conceived without the stain of original sin. The Immaculist iconography shows the Most Holy Virgin with a white tunic and a sky-blue cloak, with the moon under her feet. This representation is based on visions such as that of Saint Beatriz de Silva.

The devotion to the Immaculate Conception has been deeply rooted in Hispanic culture for centuries. Proof of this is the series of paintings of the immaculate by the painter Murillo. World-renowned works of art.

The use of blue ornaments or with blue decorative elements was, originally, a privilege enjoyed by Spain and its former territories. This privilege was granted by the Pope, recognizing the great work carried out by Spain as a defender of the Immaculist dogma.

The Immaculist privilege was applied on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (December 8) and its octave (the following eight days), as well as on the Saturdays when the votive mass of the Immaculate is celebrated.

Nowadays, the use of blue ornaments has been extended to other Marian celebrations.
