Marian embroideries of the lectern cloth

Lectern cloth decorated with two religious elements related to the Virgin Mary: the Marian monogram with crown and the blue flowers.

  • Marian monogram with crown

The Marian monogram is a Marian symbol formed by the letters A and M.

The letters A and M represent the Latin expression Ave Maria. The word Ave comes from the Latin verb "avēre," which means "to be healthy, to enjoy health."

This expression is used as a form of greeting, being the respectful equivalent to hello or good morning.

In the Bible, in the Gospel, the Angel Gabriel visits Mary to announce that she is God's chosen one. The angel greets Our Holy Mother with the Latin expression Ave, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, which could be translated as Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. A sequence of words that are still used today in the Hail Mary prayer.

The crown accompanying the monogram represents Mary's power as queen of heaven and earth, as well as her ability to intercede between men and God.

  • Blue flowers | Blue lilies

The sky-blue color is closely related to the Virgin Mary and, in particular, to the Immaculate Conception in the Catholic Church.

The blue color, following the Spanish Immaculist tradition, represents the absolute purity of the Virgin Mary, who was conceived without the stain of original sin. The Immaculist iconography shows the Blessed Virgin with a white tunic and a sky-blue cloak, with the moon under her feet. This representation is based on visions like that of Saint Beatrice of Silva.
