Buying candles for the Advent wreath

There are several factors to consider when buying candles for an Advent crown.

  • Size of the Advent candles

The first point to bear in mind when we are going to purchase candles is their size.

Advent candles are available in various sizes: 2 x 20, 3 x 30, 5 x 15, 5 x 27 and 6 x 15 cm. These dimensions combine the desired height with sufficient thickness to ensure stability.

The wreaths can use sockets or an altar candlestick with a spike, so that the candle remains firmly in place during the celebration or domestic prayer.

Before ordering the candles two checks must be made on the Advent wreath. First, check whether the diameter of the sockets matches the size of the candles. Second, make sure that the base of the wreath is large enough to bear the weight of the candles. Tall candles on a wreath with a narrow base could pose a risk.

  • Colours of the candles for the Advent candle holder

Besides size, Advent candles offer two main configurations for the Advent wreath. On the one hand, the set of four liturgical colours (purple, green, red and white) helps to highlight visually the symbolic richness of the liturgical season.

On the other hand, the two-colour set, with three purple candles and one rose candle, is linked to the tradition of Gaudete Sunday, as suggested by the GIRM n. 337 when it explains the use of purple and rose.

  • Types of candles

In our online shop you can purchase two types of Advent candles: wax candles or candles with paraffin cartridges. When choosing between solid wax candles and candles with liquid wax containers for the Advent wreath, it is worth weighing up the advantages and disadvantages.

The wax candle has a traditional appearance and can be placed in most sockets and a candelabrum with a spike, although it usually produces more drips and requires the whole piece to be replaced once it has been consumed.

Candles with liquid wax containers provide a stable flame, generate less waste and have a longer burn time, although they require a compatible candle holder (they cannot be used in an altar candlestick with a spike) and a supply of refills (paraffin and wicks).
