The lighting of Advent candles according to colour

The Advent candles are a characteristic element of this liturgical season, both in parishes and in Christian homes.

During the four Sundays of Advent, the four candles of the Advent wreath are lit progressively. On the First Sunday of Advent, the first purple candle is lit; on the Second Sunday, the second purple candle; on the Third Sunday (Gaudete), the rose candle; and finally, on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the third purple candle is lit.

According to the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, the Advent wreath increases its light from Sunday to Sunday until Christmas, highlighting the community’s spiritual journey.

The purple candles express penance, vigilance, and conversion, which are proper to the Advent season, in continuity with the liturgical use indicated in the GIRM no. 346. Lighting the purple candles on the first, second, and fourth Sundays marks the process of inner preparation undertaken during this liturgical season.

The rose candle, lit on the third Sunday of Advent in accordance with GIRM no. 346, softens the general penitential character of Advent and manifests the joyful anticipation of the Lord’s nearness.

Both colours articulate the Advent journey: sustained conversion and joyful hope leading towards Christmas.
