What is a candle snuffer and how does it work?
The candle snuffer is an instrument composed of a conical metal bell attached to an elongated handle. It serves to extinguish candles or altar candles placed at height. When the bell is placed over the flame, it blocks the oxygen that feeds combustion and extinguishes the candle immediately and in a controlled manner.
This wrought-iron model features a bell articulated by means of a metal hinge. The articulation allows the bell to be tilted at different angles, adapting to candles situated in varied positions: vertical in altar candlesticks, inclined in wall sconces, or in hard-to-reach places.
Why use a candle snuffer?
The candle snuffer offers practical advantages compared to blowing directly on the flame of a candle or an Paschal candle.
Controlled extinguishing significantly reduces black smoke and the unpleasant smell of the glowing wick.
It also prevents splashes of liquid wax that the air causes when blowing, protecting cloths, Catholic vestments, and nearby surfaces.
From a conservation standpoint, the instrument prolongs the wick's useful life by preventing it from being consumed unnecessarily after extinguishing the flame. This guarantees more uniform combustion in subsequent uses.
