Saint Mary, the Virgin of Joy

The figure of the Virgin Mary has always been associated with a feeling of joy and gladness. Saint Mary has been portrayed as a person full of kindness and naturally joyful.

Mary's joy comes from her intimate relationship with Jesus and her faith in the ways of God for her. Despite facing many trials and sufferings, Mary always remained steadfast with a heart full of hope and joy, since her happiness did not depend on material goods or earthly possessions.

Mary's happiness came from Heaven, her unbreakable bond with her Son and her eternal love for the Word of God. Mary's joy and love have been an example for all Christians throughout history.

This love and happiness has been reflected in many statues, paintings and all kinds of artistic representations throughout the world.

It is common to find representations of Mary with the name of Our Lady of Joy in many parishes and churches. For example, in Spain, we can find depictions of Our Lady of Joy in places as diverse as Seville, Monzón, Barcelona, etc.

Alabaster figures and paintings of Our Lady of Joy

Catholic statuary is one of the branches of parish art with the greatest proliferation.

There are endless representations of the Virgin Mary in our parishes, temples and homes. Each figure follows the criteria and manufacturing techniques according to their time.

For example, there are many wood carvings, stone sculptures, etc.

The emergence of new manufacturing techniques has allowed a democratization of the figures of the Virgin Mary. Mass production processes wil enable the sale of figures of high artistic value at low prices.

The hand-carved pieces in stone or alabaster blocks were costly to be accessible to most parishioners. Traditionally, these hand-carved alabaster pieces were purchased for the altars of a church.

  • Molded alabaster powder figurines and paintings

Molded alabaster pieces can be mass-produced. The hand of the artisan sculptor is only necessary to make the original figures that will serve as molds.

Alabaster figures can be made with a level of detail similar to carved pieces, using alabaster powder as the material inside the molds.

The big difference is found in the selling price of the figures. The time it takes to make a carved figure has nothing to do with the time needed to make a molded statue or painting.

The molded figures are much cheaper than the statues carved or sculpted by hand.
