Ars Sacra Musical Chapel

The Ars Sacra musical chapel is a trio founded in 1997 whose main objective is the accompaniment as musical accompaniment to religious celebrations and brotherhoods.

The chapel music group is made up of Mario Alberto Rico Aguilar, David Delgado Expósito and Jesús Moreno González . The three members of the trio have classical musical training that has allowed them to develop a long career in all kinds of liturgical events and brotherhoods: processional transfers, Via Crucis, masses, proclamations, rosaries, triduums, presentations at the houses of Brotherhoods, and a long and so on.

Mario Rico plays the Oboe and assumes tasks of musical direction. David Delgado plays the clarinet in addition to taking on archiving and musical direction work. Finally, last but not least, Jesús Moreno plays the bassoon.

Along with the three permanent components, the Ars Sacra chapel musical group has collaborators such as Sara Hernández López (flute) or the group of deep voices De Profundis.

Ars sacra is a musical chapel with a wide repertoire of musical pieces in which different currents can be found: old motets, baroque, Renaissance, liturgical works,... even adaptations of compositions by important Andalusian brotherhoods.

Interview Mario Alberto Rico, David Delgado and Jesús Moreno (Ars Sacra)

Dear friends of Religious Articles of Brabander, today we have the pleasure of introducing you to the members of the Ars Sacra chapel music trio: Mario Alberto Rico Aguilar, David Delgado Expósito and Jesús Moreno González. Thank you very much for dedicating your time to us. It is a pleasure to have your company.

  • First of all we would like to get to know you a little better. Please tell us a little about yourselves: your origins, how you met, your musical training, etc…

We met casually at musical acts, as in most cases of many musicians. Of course, the specialization in instruments of each one, Mario Rico Aguilar (oboe), David Delgado Expósito (Clarinet), and Jesús Moreno González (Bassoon) was to blame, thus forming the traditional chapel trio of today.

  • What was the process for you to make the decision in 1997 to found the Ars Sacra musical chapel?

The Ars Sacra Musical Chapel was born as a result of the love of music of its members, as well as their passion for the brotherhood world, sacred and worship music.

Three fellow musicians decided to create a musical formation highlighting as one of its main objectives the continuous growth, not only in the field of performance, but in its archive and musical research, in the dissemination of the history of processional and worship music, as well as in the recording of our music, the collaboration in other discs, or the accompaniment to all kinds of cult acts. All this done with great pleasure, work, affection and effort.

  • During your long career you have had the opportunity to participate in countless events, processions, masses, etc… Surely all of them are pleasant memories, but is there any performance that you remember with special affection? Why?

They are all emotional because we feel and enjoy it to the fullest, and not only in the act itself but also in its delicate preparation. To highlight some, we can review our “Silentium” Sacred Concerts, which were offered in 2020 in Seville (Hdad. de la VeraCruz) together with the Grupo de Voces Graves De Profundis , and in Córdoba (Hdad. de la Expiración) together with Irene Gallardo reciting biblical passages by way of reflection, as well as innumerable internal cults or processional outings.

  • In 2020, the group releases its first record, Silentium. An album made up of 24 works that, as we know, is having a great reception by the public. Why did you decide to release an album? How was the selection process of the works included?

The journey on the album had its origin in the encouragement and encouragement of personalities from the musical world and brotherhood, as well as part of many friends. They encouraged us and made us see that it would be a long-awaited album since it had been 10 years since an album of the same genre had been published and recorded. It would have to be a great job for the brotherhood and religious world , and try to be a piece for collectors, but at the same time a lot of responsibility for it, and of course you always have the desire and uncertainty of knowing its acceptance.

In general, the reception has been fabulous, we have had many reproductions in digital media, especially on Spotify. The physical disc has been distributed and required in many brotherhood and/or religious stores, as well as bookstores throughout Spain. Also review that many radios, TV, brotherhood portals or production companies have done so far, and in their short lifetime, use and dissemination of Silentium. Therefore we are tremendously satisfied.

As for its elaboration, it has been a process where great care has been taken with detail, and not only interpretive, but also of a tedious previous and subsequent work such as the choice of works, having a very large repertoire of almost 500 pieces , the design and layout of the album, photographs, documentation and elaboration of the libretto with the participation of friends from the musical world and brotherhood, and of course the recording.

Finally, thank you for the attention given, your constant dedication, and of course for allowing chapel music to be given a voice in this great little corner. Hello everyone.

Mario, David and Jesus
