Medal of the prayer card of Saint John Paul
The devotional prayer card incorporates a small metal medal with embossed details, designed to accompany prayer and remembrance of the saint.
On the obverse appears the effigy of Saint John Paul II, together with his name, as an invitation to contemplate his figure and to ask for his intercession.
On the reverse a Cross is depicted, centre of the Christian faith, framed by floral filigrees that evoke life, hope, and spiritual growth.
The pontifical coat of arms of Saint John Paul II
The pontifical coat of arms of Saint John Paul II stands out for its simplicity and for the clarity with which it expresses his spiritual programme. On a blue field appears a large Cross and, next to it, an "M": two signs that, together, condense his way of understanding the Christian life.
The Cross occupies the centre and refers to the heart of the Gospel: Redemption and the love of Christ. In the language of the coat of arms, it places the Cross at the centre of his pontificate and recalls that the Church is understood from the Paschal Mystery. Here, the mercy of God and the dignity of the human being are revealed.
The "M" alludes to Mary, inseparable from the mystery of Christ. It evokes the Virgin at the foot of the Cross and underlines an intuition very characteristic of Wojtyła: the Marian way leads to Christ. In that line his motto is also understood, "Totus Tuus" ("All yours"), expression of his filial self-gift to Mary as a concrete way of belonging more fully to Jesus.
Canonisation of John Paul II
Saint John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła) was Bishop of Rome and Successor of Peter between 1978 and 2005. His magisterium, profoundly centred on Christ and on the inviolable dignity of the person, marked the Church at the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.
On 1 May 2011 he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and on 27 April 2014 he was canonised by Pope Francis, during the Mass of Divine Mercy Sunday, together with Saint John XXIII.
Canonisation is the solemn recognition by the Church that he lived the Christian virtues in an exemplary manner. He may be venerated as a saint by the whole Church, proposing him as a model and intercessor for the faithful.
Prayer to ask for the intercession of the saint
The reverse incorporates a prayer addressed to Saint John Paul II.
The text asks for the saint's intercession before the Most Holy Trinity and presents his virtues as a model of Christian life oriented towards eternal life. Likewise, it underlines the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary as a sure way to draw near to Jesus Christ, in coherence with the Marian spirituality of the pontiff.
