Meaning of paten in the Catholic Church?

The host plate or liturgical paten is a sacred vessel in the form of a circular saucer intended to receive the host during Mass. According to the GIRM n. 327, the communion paten deserves special honour among liturgical objects because on it the bread is offered, consecrated, and consumed in the Eucharistic celebration.

How to clean and preserve a gold-plated paten?

The maintenance of a liturgical paten requires special care to preserve the finish without compromising the reverence due to the sacred vessel.

The fundamental rule is to avoid aggressive chemical products on surfaces that will come into contact with the Sacred Species.

Routine cleaning after each use: Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth or cotton cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a few drops of neutral soap.

Rinse with another cloth dampened only with water to remove soap residue. Dry thoroughly with a dry cloth, since moisture accelerates the darkening of the brass.

Important precautions: Avoid scouring pads, abrasive products, and dishwashers, which damage the gold-plated finish. Do not use polishes with ammonia under any circumstances.

Storage: Store in a dry place, wrapped in a soft cloth. Handle preferably with cotton gloves to prevent fingerprints from accelerating darkening. If stains appear, clean them soon with the gentle method described.
