Standing lecterns with symbols of the Evangelists

The tradition of decorating lecterns with symbols and identifying elements of the four Evangelists is believed to have its origins in the Middle Ages. At that time it was very common to use lecterns made of wood, bronze, etc... decorated with the symbols of the four Evangelists: The angel (symbol of Saint Matthew), the lion (symbol of Saint Mark), the ox ( symbol of Saint Luke) or/and the eagle (symbol of Saint John the Evangelist).

Among the symbols used to decorate the church lecterns, the eagle was the most popular. Church lecterns decorated with eagles could often be seen. The most common were bronze lecterns with the eagle with open wings. In this type of church lectern, the Gospels rested on the back of the eagle.

This church lectern model continues with its eagle shape, following this long tradition.
