What does INRI mean?

The acronym INRI refers to "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum", translated as "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", a title that Pontius Pilate ordered to be inscribed on the Cross of Jesus, as narrated in John 19:19-20.

"19 Pilate also wrote a notice and put it on the Cross. It read: 'Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews.'
20 Many Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek."

The use of this plaque on modern crosses follows the tradition of visually representing one of the most recognizable aspects of the Crucifixion, allowing the faithful to reflect on the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection.
