Immaculate Conception of Mary, image based on Murillo's figures.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo , known as Murillo, was an important Spanish painter of the 17th century. He was born and died in Seville. His life was deeply linked to the city of Seville.

He achieved great fame for his religious paintings and portraits. Among his religious paintings, some of the most popular were his works inspired by the Immaculate Conception. He came to paint several pictures related to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

Throughout this extensive Marian production, he developed a very characteristic style when it came to representing the Immaculate Conception . Murillo in most of his paintings painted the Virgin Mary with the following characteristics:

  • The figure of the Virgin wears a white dress and a blue tunic.
  • Maria's hands rest gently on his chest.
  • The Virgin Mary directs her gaze to heaven.
  • Our Lady's feet are on a cloud in which several Angels can be seen.

The figure of the Immaculate Conception that you now contemplate follows the tradition established by the great painter Murillo.

The clothes of the image of the Virgin are white and blue. Maria has her hands resting on her chest as she looks up at the sky. Finally, on the base on which the image of the Immaculate Conception rests, several Angels can be seen.
