What is a devotional holy card?

A Catholic holy card is a Catholic prayer card with protective coating, intended to accompany daily prayer and to keep an image of devotion. This model incorporates a metal medal and is presented double-sided in 8.5 × 5.5 cm (3.35 × 2.17 in) format, practical to carry in a wallet or handbag.

The lamination helps to keep the text legible when it is handled daily, avoiding the usual deterioration of many holy cards of saints.

Merciful Jesus on the holy card: "Jesus, I trust in You"

The iconography of Merciful Jesus on this holy card refers to the devotion to the Divine Mercy, disseminated from the revelations received by Saint Faustina Kowalska. On the front appears the legend "Jesus I trust in You", a brief formula that concentrates the spiritual meaning of the image.

The phrase "Protect me", printed alongside "Merciful Jesus", directs the devotion towards a specific supplication: to ask for spiritual protection in ordinary life.

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

The incorporated medal corresponds to the Miraculous Medal, linked to the apparitions of 1830 in the Rue du Bac (Paris) to Saint Catherine Labouré. On the reverse of the holy card the promise is included: "All the people who wear this Medal will receive great graces; the graces will be special for those who wear it with great trust". This statement underlines the interior attitude required: faith and trust.

The medal shows on one side the figure of the Virgin in relief and, on the other, a Marian monogram.

The small medal of the Miraculous Virgin is integrated into the lamination of the holy card, so it is protected from rubbing and reduces snagging when it is kept in a wallet.

Holy card with St John Paul II and "Totus Tuus"

The figure of St John Paul II appears greeting, alongside the inscription "Blessed John Paul II" and the motto "Totus Tuus". This expression ("All yours") identifies his Marian spirituality and his consecration to Mary as a path to belong more fully to Christ.

On the reverse one of his best-known phrases is included: "Do not be afraid to open wide the doors to Christ!". On a double-sided Catholic holy card, this quotation acts as a brief and direct exhortation: Marian trust and the mercy of Christ are also expressed as a concrete decision to welcome Christ in daily life.

This holy card brings together three devotional focuses on one support: Merciful Christ, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and St John Paul II. The phrase "Jesus I trust in You" places the centre in Christ and his mercy; the promise of "great graces" recalls that the medal is lived with "great trust"; and "Totus Tuus" expresses a Marian self-giving that leads to Christ.
