Catholic Church glass cruets definition

Glass-made Mass cruets are liturgical tools used by priests during parish celebrations.

Cruets are usually referred to in the plural as they are a set of elements typically purchased together, forming a set. This set of elements, known as liturgical cruets or Catholic Church cruets, typically consists of three elements: the small pitchers, the tray or plate, and the lids or stoppers.

Glass bottle of cruets set

The bottle in sets of Mass cruets typically has a spout and a handle. The spout serves as a channel through which the liquid flows without spilling. The handle allows for a more convenient emptying of the water and wine from the cruets.

The bottles are the containers that hold the water and wine to be used during the Eucharist. The Mass cruet jugs are made of glass for several reasons.

Firstly, glass is an easy-to-clean material. Additionally, it is straightforward to determine when it is dirty. It is important that the containers for the water and wine, which will be transformed into the Blood of Christ, are in optimal hygienic conditions.

On the other hand, glass is a material that resists contact with liquids without rusting or losing its properties.

Another relevant characteristic that glass brings to cruets is transparency. Glass bottles allow the priest to visualize their contents. Transparency makes it very easy to know which liquid each bottle contains.

Lids or stoppers of Catholic Church glass cruets set

The stopper of the glass jugs is another fundamental element within a Catholic Church cruet set.

It fundamentally fulfills two functions: aesthetic, symbolic, and functional.

Stoppers are usually decorated with Christ-related elements, mainly the Cross.

In addition, the lids, caps, or stoppers of the cruets are of great importance as protectors of water and wine. The stopper is a barrier preventing any foreign object from entering the cruets. They are a defense mechanism to prevent the wine and water from being contaminated.

The stoppers of glass cruets are typically made of the same material as the jugs, but this is not always the case. At times, they can be made of metal, silver, ...

Tray of Mass Cruets

The third component of cruet sets is the plate or tray.

The main function of the plate of cruets is to serve as a support and means of transportation for the bottles.

This element can have various shapes. Sometimes, it has the form of a simple tray, while other models of cruets have trays with more complex structures with holding mechanisms for the bottles.

Concerning materials, the plates of glass cruets can be made of a wide variety. There are trays of glass, wood, silver, brass, ...
