What is the humeral veil?

The humeral veil is a priestly shoulder cloth that is placed over the shoulders and the back of the celebrant to cover the hands when carrying the Blessed Sacrament, and in other liturgical celebrations. Made of polyester and embroidered in gold thread, it is fastened with a front closure and keeps the garment stable during blessings and processions.

The shoulder veil of the priest is used to express reverence when handling sacred realities, especially in the exposition and blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. Signs and objects intended for worship must be treated with respect and dignity. This practice underlines that the liturgical action is not reduced to a functional gesture, but rather communicates a visible adoration by the manner of taking and presenting the sacred.

Embroideries of the humeral veil

The main embroidery is situated in the area of the Benediction veil that the priest places over his back. The central embroidery is divided into two compositions. On the one hand, the embroidery has a cruciform shape in baroque style.

In the centre, a circular medallion with a flower stands out, surrounded by four arms in the form of a Greek cross. Each arm combines:

  • Central petal with lattice filling
  • Acanthus leaves that radiate outwards with flame-like points
  • Symmetrical vegetal scrolls on both sides that frame the composition.

On the other hand, an exterior structure formed with curved stems and palm leaves that descend towards the lower part of the veil.

The two ends of the veil, visible when the priest wraps his hands, present two identical ornamented crosses of smaller size.

Each one repeats the scheme of the central motif: circular medallion, arms with lattice and radiant acanthus leaves.
