Christian Art Figures

The Spanish Catholic handcraft figurines originated in 1880, the year the company Arte Cristiano was established, originally named Vayreda, Berga y Cía. The company’s primary goal was to create an artisanal workshop to provide ongoing employment to students of the Olot Drawing School.

The production of Christian Art figures in Olot begins with the creation of a clay model. This model is replicated in plaster for greater durability. Molds are carefully crafted to ensure precise details.

The original models are used to create molds and counter-molds that allow the creation of the pieces. The material used is wood pulp or cardboard-wood pulp, made with plaster, water, and natural glue.

Figures over 30 cm (11.81 in) are reinforced with burlap, and larger ones include wooden crossbeams for added stability.

Smaller parts, such as arms and hands, are molded separately and reinforced with wires to prevent breakage.

Some special pieces are made with silicone molds, which are more durable and resistant to wear.

Once removed from the molds, the figures are carefully sanded and polished before being painted. Glass eyes are manually inserted, adding unique realism and expression.

The finishing of the figures is done entirely by hand by specialized artisans. First, all details corresponding to the type of finish are painted. Pieces with more complex decorations are typically adorned with gold leaf.

Gold leaf finishes are the highest quality decorations within the Christian Art figure catalog. The gold leaf is applied to specific areas outlined with glue and then polished with agate stone to enhance its shine. This process gives Christian Art figures their distinctive radiant finish.

In addition, the museum has a rotating collection of religious figures. Arte Cristiano produces a series of pieces intended to be exhibited. 

This type of piece, once it has completed its cycle within the museum, is sold.
