Candle holder for altar table in the Catholic Church

The altar table candlesticks are one of the highlighted elements placed on the Catholic Church table.

Their main purpose is to hold the candles that are lit during the Mass and other liturgical celebrations that require it.

In general, there are two types of table candlesticks based on the type of mechanisms they use to fix the candles.

  • Table candlesticks with socket

Altar table candlesticks with socket. These are metalware pieces that have a cylindrical piece that serves as a container for the base of the candle. They can be used for all types of candles: wax candles, candles with paraffin or liquid wax containers, electric candles or battery candles.

  • Table candlesticks with pricket

Table candlesticks with spike or pricket. This model of candlesticks has an extension in the form of a spike on the plate. The candle is placed by pricking on this extension until it is firm. This type of table candlesticks for churches are usually bought when they are going to be used with wax candles. The candlesticks with spike usually have five parts:

Foot of the candlestick: The base or support area of the candlestick.
Stem of the candlestick: The vertical part that rises from the foot to the plate or washer. It can be decorated with different Catholic elements.
Knot: A protuberance in the stem, a decorative element that is often located halfway up its height.
Bowl: A container located at the top of the stem to collect the wax that drips from the candles.
Spike or pricket: The pointed part at the top of the stem where the candle is fixed.
