What are Catholic Church candle capitals?

Church candle capitals are decorative elements used in temples to support and enhance the candles used in religious ceremonies. These pieces of Catholic metalwork usually have the shape of a cap or hood.

The capitals are placed on top of the candles with the aim of keeping the wick or pabilo in the center and preventing the wax from spilling down the sides of the candle.

In addition to their purely practical functionality, they are also decorative elements that contribute to creating a serene and reverent atmosphere. Their presence on altars and prayer spaces enhances the symbolism and importance of light in the Christian faith.

Catholic Church Candle capitals in different materials

Candle capitals for church candles can be made of various materials. Metal (brass) is the most popular material for church candle capitals. Metal pieces are durable and have an elegant finish.

Brass candle capitals can be made with two finishes: imitation bronze for gold-colored capitals or imitation silver for nickel-plated capitals.

There are also candle capitals made of other materials such as bronze, crystal, or glass.

Measurements of capitals according to candle diameter

The purchase of a capital is determined by the diameter of the candle in which it will be placed. A capital must have the right measurement to fit the candle and perform its function optimally.

A capital with a larger diameter than the candle will not fit correctly. It will end up at the bottom of the candle or in the candleholder.

A capital with a smaller diameter than the candle cannot be placed in position. In this situation, if the difference between the diameters is not too large, a small amount of wax can be removed from the candle to adjust it to the capital.

The measurements indicated in the dropdown menu correspond to the diameters of the candles. This means that if your parish typically uses 3 cm diameter wax candles, you should purchase a 3 cm capital.
