What is a Marian chasuble?

The Marian chasuble is the outer sacred vestment that the priest wears during celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary. These liturgical vestments are worn over the alb and stole. Marian priest vestments usually incorporate iconographic elements linked with the Virgin Mary and are made in white or blue fabrics.

The colour blue is especially linked with the feasts of the Immaculate Conception.

Symbolism of the blue Marian Catholic chasuble and its liturgical use

The use of the blue Marian liturgical chasuble constitutes a liturgical exception to great historical and theological richness. Although white is the colour generally prescribed for feasts of the Virgin, the Holy See granted Spain and its former territories the privilege of using sky blue. This privilege applies specifically to the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and underlines the historic defense of the Immaculist dogma by the Spanish nation.

The Marian chasuble presented in the images not only fulfils this chromatic function, but also enriches the rite through its visual catechesis in the central braid. The embroidery highlights three fundamental elements:

  1. The Marian Monogram "A" and "M": This represents the expression "Ave Maria". The phrase means "Hail, Mary" in Latin and has its origin in the passage known as the Annunciation, the moment in which the angel Gabriel greets Mary: "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (in Latin, Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum). As we can read in Luke 1:28.
  2. The Lilies: These flowers are the pre-eminent symbol of Mary's virginal purity and chastity, alluding to her preservation from every stain of original sin.
  3. The Doves: These evoke the Holy Spirit, recalling the moment of the Incarnation.
