What is an Advent wreath?

The Advent wreath is a Catholic metalware with five candleholder for the four Sundays of Advent and Christmas Day. Its metal structure with adjustable height facilitates the progressive lighting during the four Sundays, maintaining stability and visibility in the sanctuary.

The Advent wreaths | Meaning of the candles and the decoration

Advent wreaths are pieces of Catholic goldsmith work that have a very important role for the preparation for Christmas in Catholic churches. Each element that makes up Advent candle holder possesses a profound theological meaning. The understanding of these symbols allows the Christian community to prepare spiritually for the celebration of the birth of Christ.

The set of these elements transforms a decorative object into an instrument of prayer that accompanies families and communities during the four weeks of preparation for Christmas.

  • The circular shape of the wreath: symbol of eternity

The circular structure of the wreath represents the eternity of God, without beginning or end. This circle also evokes the cycle of the liturgical year and the cyclical nature of the time of Advent, which returns each year to renew Christian hope.

The round shape recalls the infinite love of God.

  • The green branches: hope and new life

The green branches are one of the decorative elements that are usually placed on Advent wreath. It is usual that the branches are from evergreen trees. The green branches and leaves symbolise the hope and the life that does not end. The permanent green of these branches, even in the middle of winter, anticipates the new life that Christ brings to the world with his birth.

Traditionally, branches of pine, fir, cypress or holly are used, evergreen species that keep their greenery throughout the year.

  • The colour of the five Advent candles: penitential season and anticipated joy

The wreath of five candles develops the traditional symbolism of four candles by adding a fifth central candle. The four outer candles are lit progressively during the four Sundays of Advent. The fifth candle, generally white and placed in the centre of the wreath, represents Christ.

The liturgical tradition assigns specific colours to the Advent candles, although there is a certain pastoral flexibility in their application. In Advent crown with five altar candlestick the following scheme is usually employed.

Three purple candles: They represent the penitential character of Advent, a season of spiritual preparation and conversion. They are lit on the first, second and fourth Sundays.

One rose candle: Corresponds to the third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete (from the Latin "rejoice"). The rose colour may be used, where it is customary, on Gaudete Sunday as a sign of the anticipated joy at the nearness of Christmas.

One central white candle: Symbolises Christ as Light of the world. It is lit in the celebration of Christmas, when the waiting concludes and the promise is fulfilled in the birth of the Saviour.

The Directory on Popular Piety describes how the placing of four candles on a wreath of green branches has become a symbol of Advent.
