Holy Water vessel and liturgical aspergillum | Meaning

The holy water vessel (acetre) and the liturgical aspergillum are sacred objects used in the Church to sprinkle holy water on people, buildings, places, or objects.

  • The holy water vessel (acetre)

The holy water vessel (acetre) is a religious article shaped like a cauldron. Its main purpose is to serve as a container for the cauldron of holy water used for liturgical sprinklings. Traditionally, it is made of noble metals such as gold or silver. Nowadays, it is more common to purchase holy water vessels made of metal in golden or silver color. There is also the possibility of buying holy water vessels made of metal with a silver or gold coating.

Holy water vessels can be adorned with chiseled or embossed elements both on their body and handle.

  • The liturgical aspergillum or aspersory

The liturgical aspergillum, also known as aspersory, is the sacred object used for sprinkling. In other words, if the holy water vessel is the place where the blessed water is contained, the liturgical aspergillum is used to scatter the water once it has been blessed.

The aspersory is an elongated element that consists of two clearly distinguished parts.

On one side, there is the handle. This part is usually made of metal or wood. It is the area that is manipulated when using the aspergillum.

At the other end, there are bristles or a water reservoir, typically in the form of a hollow, perforated metal ball, which serves as a temporary container for the water before it is sprinkled.
