The Dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit is one of the christian images most recognized. This symbolism has its origin in the Bible, during the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan river.

Jesus came out of the water; and then the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him

San Mateo - 3, 16.

Some authors relate the sheep that holds the Good Shepherd on his shoulders the lost sheep which can be read in the parable described in the Gospel of St. Luke 15, 4-6.

What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

And when she finds it, puts it joyfully on his shoulders; and when you get home, gathers his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Mourned with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost.

If a man have an hundred sheep, and be gone astray one of them, do not stop in the mountains, the ninety and nine to go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, I tell you truly that has more joy over it than over the ninety nine not going astray.

In the same way, is not the will of your heavenly Father that you will miss one of these little ones.

Parable linked to mercy, to the search, inspired by Jesus, should we make of the christians that have been lost along the way, they have moved away from the Good Shepherd, who have stopped listening to the voice of Christ and do not know how to return to his flock, the Holy Mother Church.

Mercy is very present in the pontificate of Pope Francis from the very first moment. Some examples in which we appreciate the importance of the misericorda for Pope Francis are, for example, which chose the motto "Miserando atque eligendo" for his papal coat of arms (which could be translated as "looked at Him with mercy and chose him"), or the celebration of the Year of Jubilee, of Mercy, the Year of Extraordinary Jubilee in 2015. The symbol of the Year of Jubilee, of Mercy was an image of the Good Shepherd, who on his shoulders he carried a man instead of a sheep.

The flock that follows the Good Shepherd, a symbol of the Cross of Pope Francis

In the horizontal arms of the Cross of Pope Francis, just behind the Good Shepherd, we see a flock of sheep that follows Jesus.

The sheep and the shepherd are a symbol that has been used repeatedly to represent Jesus and the Catholic Church. Jesus is the good shepherd, the loving shepherd who is willing to give his life for his sheep, his followers. Jesus gave himself, was crucified and died for our sins, for the sins of his flock. The Good Shepherd sacrifices his life for the welfare of his sheep.

Artículos del Papa Francisco | Rosario del PapaIn the Bible you pick up many moments in which it relates to Jesus with the Good Shepherd and to all christians in the flock. One of the most well-known is the Gospel according to st. John 10, 11-18:

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. But the hireling, not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf does prey on them and scatters them, because he is an hireling and cares nothing for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd; and know my sheep and my own know me, as knows me the Father and I know my Father and I lay down my life for the sheep. I also have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those I have to drive and listen to my voice; and there shall be one flock, one shepherd. That's why my Father love me, because I lay down my life, to take it again. No one takes it from me; I lay it down voluntarily. I have power to lay it down and power to take it again; this is the order which I have received of my Father.

The Good Shepherd, origin of the Cross of Pope Francis

The identification of Jesus as the Good Shepherd has its origin in the years following the death of Our Savior. It is known that in the early years of our era the image of the Good Shepherd was very popular among early christians.

According to some studies, still to this day is still nearly a thousand performances christian whose theme is linked with the image of the Good Shepherd. Religious works that date back to essentially the centuries II and III d. C.

These representations of the Good Shepherd is found in all types of locations paleochristian: cemeteries, baptisterios or baptismal fonts, basilicas, etc...

There has been much speculation about the reason for the importance of the image of the Good Shepherd in these first years of christianity. The reasons are not clear but it is believed that various reasons would have helped to make the image of the Good Shepherd in one of the symbols identifying the first christians:

  1. The image of a shepherd carrying a sheep or lamb on the shoulders had already been employed previously by other peoples. In times of great persecution, the early christian sought to pagan images, inspired by the classical culture, which gave them a few meanings identified solely by christians.
  2. In the first centuries the greater part of the population was illiterate and engaged in activities related to the field. The christians were trying to evangelize with symbols and images that were easily interpretable by the people who saw them. The figure of the Good Shepherd carrying the lost sheep shows god's love. The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd was a simple way that the population would understand the love of Jesus for his flock.

The use of the image of the Good Shepherd was decreasing with the passing of the centuries. You can hardly find depictions of Jesus as the Good Shepherd throughout the Middle Ages. During the following centuries their use was infrequent.

The beginning of the Pontificate of Pope Francis, from the time you first went out to the balcony of the Vatican dressed as the Pope and the Cross of the Good Shepherd to the neck, it has meant a reunion with the figure of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
